Croagh Patrick has been a place of pilgrimage for over 1500 years since St. Patrick was believed to have spent 40 days fasting on the mountain in 441 A.D.. It is located near Westport in Co. Mayo, Ireland and on the last Sunday of July each year its slopes are full of pilgrims, some barefoot, climbing to the top to attend Mass in the small church built on the summit.
The mountain rises 2510 feet (765m) above sea level and from the top, on a fine day, you can see the 365 small islands of Clew Bay below.
