The Claddagh is an old Gaelic symbol representing 'Love and Friendship'. The original Claddagh ring is believed to date back to the 17th Century when it became popular to exchange the rings as symbols of friendship or betrothal. If the wearer was married the heart was worn towards the wrist, if not, towards the fingertips. In Ireland the exchange of Claddagh rings is a tradition which still exists today.
